Shower Melts for Stuffy Noses

Everyone here has been so gunked up, stuffy and generally feeling blah. Its a cruddy mix of colds and allergies . I made a small batch of shower melts to help open us up.  I used a regular size ice tray and this batch made 6. I've made these before using Vick's vapor rub but this go around I used Maty's. I had read good things about it and wanted to give it a try for our grandson. Since I had it on hand , I used it for this batch; and they smell divine! Vick's now has a lavender rub , and Maty's has a lavender and chamomile rub. I think I will try those next and make some relaxing bath melts.
Anyway, as you can see, I used the store brand of corn starch and food coloring. These brands are cost effective and work great.  You do not need food coloring,  but I used a mix of blue and green to get this minty shade. These are easy to make and only take a few minutes to throw together.

My handy dandy supplies are corn starch, measuring cup, cup of water, spoon, fork, food coloring vapor rub, plastic bowl and ice cube tray. . Yes, that is marker on our kitchen table. You will also find paint, crayon, glitter and glue on it if you look hard enough. This table has seen us through many homeschool years. I treasure each spot. Thanks Momma and Daddy for giving us this jewel so many years ago.

Maty's vapor rub. It is petroleum free. I love the fact it has peppermint ! Y'all know I'm crazy over peppermint! I bought it at Food City for around $5. It is also available at Walmart and Amazon.
For this small batch I used 1 1/2 tablespoons of vapor rub.
I added the vapor rub to 1/2 cup corn starch.
Using a fork, mix the vapor rub into the corn starch until it is well combined and looks "grainy". It should resemble flour when you cut butter or shortening into it.
Add water by the spoonful , one at a time , until the mixture makes a thick paste. I got carried away with the water on this batch but no worries. I dusted the finished product with corn starch to soak up the extra wetness. This is also the time to add food coloring if you want. I used 2 drops green and 2 drops blue to get this minty shade.
Pour into an ice tray or other mold and freeze for about 20 - 30 minutes.
Remove your melts from the mold. I tossed mine with corn starch to soak up the extra wetness. You can store them in a cool , dry area in an airtight container. We keep ours in the fridge. Toss one in the shower with you to have some nice , sinus opening vapor.
I hope you enjoy this simple DIY . It is a great way to get some cold and allergy relief. Blessings ! ~ Nikki

Happy September

Wow , can you believe it is September already? Autumn is showing up in little ways here. I love it. I started my new classes the other day and so far so good. I have computer class with DD, BabyGirl. Thats fun :) I helped my Brother move into his new place yesterday. Then last night I started feeling real rotten. Then this morning I woke up with a full blown cold. My entire family had it last week so it was inevitable that I got it. I just dislike colds so much. I have some canning that I need to do but I just couldn't find my get up and go this morning lol Anyway, I've got a neat post coming up in a few for all those who sew out there. Let me know if you find the links helpful. Blessings! ~ Nikki

Preacher's Anniversary Gift - Minus Pictures :(

Ok , I made Preachers cooling bandanna for his anniversary gift but on the down side there were *sniff* dead batteries in DD camera, mine was completely void of batteries. The good news is that DD got batteries for hers and I was able to get pictures of some canning I did. But that is another post. So I guess I will just be sharing the details about my sewing project with you.
1. measure and cut a piece of cloth that can be folded in half length-wise and be long enough to tie around your neck without "binding". Preacher has a large neck so in reality an actual bandanna works best. Just cut it in half and you have enough to make two cooling bandannas.
2.fold your cloth in half (right sides touching) and sew together to make a long tube.
3.turn the tube right side out. what I did next was make a pocket for my beads that would rest on the back of Preachers neck. So I came in about 4" from each end and sewed a seam across the tube to create my pocket. Now remember to sew one then fill the pocket with the beads, then sew up the other end of your pocket. (or you will need to find a seam ripper and undo one end. I know cause I did it lol)
4. Walmart is a cheap place to get your water crystals (polymer hydrating beads). They have a small pack of beads that will expand to 1/2 " for about $2 in the floral dept. This is enough to make two bandannas. Use about 1 1/2 Tsp of the beads (or 1/2 of the pack) to fill your pocket. Then sew up that end.
5. Once all your seams are done fill a bowl with cool water and let the bandanna soak in it for about 5-6 hours. This will cause the beads to "inflate". Once they are done, wring it out and either use it on your neck for cooling or place it in the fridge to get extra cold. these make great cold packs for sprains too.
Sorry for the lack of pictures everyone but here is a link that gives some easy instructions and has some pictures. : NOTE, this tute says soak for 45 min. but we found that the directions on the bead bag worked best for the right "inflation" size.

Preacher's Anniversary Present

Saturday is our anniversary. Preacher has been wanting some more of those "cooling" bandannas. He used to have one and he loved it. Alas, it has traveled on. But I will be surprising him with some homemade ones :)  I plan on sewing them up Friday because its really my only "free" day to sew.I will post some pictures if you like and show you how they turn out.
Today has been a good day. The kids and I did our chores and then they relaxed for a while. Tman went to Dollywood with his friend. I finished my math homework and then we met Preacher at my parent's house for supper. Preacher helped my Daddy work on his mower. BabyGirl and I had school tonight but after we got out we all enjoyed a relaxing  sunset on the front porch.
Roosie made us some homemade pizza for a snack after school. She did an amazing job too :) She will be an amazing cook as she gets older. Of course her brother, Hoopy, was picking on her about her cooking but they are two peas in a pod and they don't stay angry at each other for long.
Well now its late. Preacher is sleeping and the kids have a friend staying tonight so they are going to be up late gaming. I have 3 tests to study for but my brain is tired tonight. Three hours of math will do that for a person lol. So I will be lurking and reading some blogs for a while yet. Bed time soon though *wink* Have a great night everyone, Blessings! ~ Nikki

Crochet Hat

Our weather has decided to turn cold and snowy :) I have been planning on crocheting myself a hat but prior efforts have not turned out well. So today I decided just to get to it. Believe it or not it turned out great. It so comfy too. I have a somewhat large head (seriously, its because I'm so smart...lol just kidding) so store bought knit hats can be kinda snug and end up giving me a headache. I made this one large enough to fit snug but not TOO snug :) I'm working on my scarf now. I hope to have it done by this weekend. I also need to finish repairing my Momma's quilt. So much to do yet it seems like so little time to accomplish it sometimes. I will post a picture of my hat tomorrow. have a great night everyone! ~ Blessings! ~ Nikki

Today I finished my candy corn hobo bag for the fundraiser. Its a hobo bag Nikki style. I used two different candy corn fabrics from Joanns. I also added some "patches" on both sides and cut them so they will ruffle when I wash it tomorrow. Let me know what you think. Blessings! ~ Nikki

Homestead Crafts Carnival ~ Making A Grapevine Wreath

For today's craft post I thought I would show you a grapevine wreath that I made for Nomi.Pardon the fuzzy pictures. I took them with my phone because my camera batteries are dead.
1. Take some grapevine (green or dry; I like to use green because it is more pliable and able to easily weave yet it will dry fairly quickly.) I have plenty of wild grapes growing around my house so I have plenty of materials. Weave together as many vines as you desire to create a wreath the size and thickness you like. I don't weave very intricate ones like you would buy in the stores. I like to weave mine into simple prim looking wreathes. I like all the "curly q's" on this one.
2. Once you have the shape you desire, start adding decorating elements. I found these wonderful leaves at the Dollar Tree. I think there were 12 in the pack and they are completely wired so you can adjust even the leaf tip to the shape you want.
I also found this beautiful pumpkin ribbon at the Dollar Tree.
3. Finally the finished product modeled by Roosie.
I'm looking forward to reading everyone's crafting posts. Blessings! ~ Nikki

Bath Towel Apron

My dear MIL had given me this luxurious bath towel and I had decided to make it into an apron. That was months ago ... so today while nursing my arthritis riddled hip  :) I decided to get busy sewing. The towel was 54 inches long so after I took off what I needed for the bib apron I have enough for a half apron like my Mamaw always wore. This picture is not the greatest cause I took them with my phone but my cousin Noo has my camera to get pictures of her DS's graduation. I will post better ones when I can. I used some binding fabric I've had for years to make the border and ribbons. I used the scraps from where I tapered the apron to make the pockets. Let me know what you think. Blessings!

I’m not the best sewer but would love to try this. Is it hard to make? I love aprons and wear them almost daily. this would be a great one to have. Blessings, Ann

HI Ann, this one was super easy to do. I actually did all the sewing by hand because there just wasn’t’ that much of it. I folded the towel in half length wise and cut it to my desired length. This towel came to nearly my ankles and I cut it to right above my knee. I didn’t even measure, just roughly cut where I wanted it. While I still had it folded length wise , I made a tapered cut from the top down the side of the towel that is about 6″ or so in length, once again I didn’t measure I just kinda eyeballed it LOL.That gave me my bib design. I then just sewed on the binding by folding it in half over the edges. This is so easy and virtually mistake proof. What I love about it is that the towel is so thick that it can really take a spill without soaking my clothes. Plus its white and I can bleach it without worries. Post about it if you make one, I would love to see it. I had enough towel left to make a half apron so I’m going to work on that today. Blessings!
